Kinja'd!!!

My gf asked me if I could give her any ideas for what I want for my bday next week. Which she normally never does, and was a little embarrassed that she couldn't magically guess everything. But I'm like, cool, buy me this !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! it's not even expensive and I'll be super happy with it!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I will be able to slice things perfectly evenly, and even more exciting, julienne things.

Things like...

Kinja'd!!!

C arrot and daikon for making quick pickles for banh mi.

Kinja'd!!!

Zucchini noodles.

Kinja'd!!!

Papaya salad.

Oh yeah, thanks babe!

Watch those finger tips of yours when using it. Don't want to lose any digits when making dinner!

Do you already have a good chef knife? I bought a Santoku knife for my birthday. That and a cast iron pan. I've been wanting one for ages.

For sure. I used a big pro mandoline when I worked in a kitchen and made potato chips in house. I made a lot of potato chips with fingers all intact. But I'm definitely using the guard on this thing.

I have 8" and 10" chef knives, 9" serrated, 4" paring, and nice honing steel.

Better mandolin to get (but I'm a bit of a musician):

MANdoline, ehh? So how many guys can you kill with this? Does it make beer? Will it make removing bras easier?

My knives are all scary sharp. I slipped diving some bell peppers this week and took a nice chunk out of my thumb. A mandolin is a useful tool. Especially for julienning things. Just be careful. Most chefs I know that had to get stitches involved a mandolin.

When you've julienned your fingers, don't forget to post pictures here! :)

After my third fingertip removal (with the guard, even), my wife disposed of the mandoline. The hot pepper incident was agony.

Very true, especially if you are making a vegetarian dish.

It mostly removes fingertips if you're not careful.

I plan to be careful, and know it's dangerous. I've got a decent amount of experience with one from when I worked in a kitchen—where I gashed myself a few times but never with the mandoline.

That is one challenge I hope not to fulfill.

I tried shopping around for one with good reviews AND relatively low incidence of fingertip removal.
